Claws and Cold Water: Our Frostmaiden Favorites from Icewind Dale

Karwind's Collectibles: D&D Miniatures Spotlight

It's getting colder here, and that always puts us in the mood for Icewind Dale. Long nights, howling wind, and the goddess Auril keeping the sun away. In the 2020 adventure Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, the cold itself is the enemy. WizKids made a miniatures set for that adventure, and while our stock is on the small side right now, it has a few figures any winter campaign could use.

About the Set

D&D Icons of the Realms: Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden came out in September 2020 to go along with the adventure. WizKids described it as a 45-figure set, sold in random boosters, with an 8-booster brick at $135.92. It brought the far north to the table: Reghed nomads with a Knucklehead Trout, a Tomb Tapper, an Abominable Yeti, a Night Hag, and forms of the Frostmaiden herself. WizKids also released a separate premium Chardalyn Dragon figure.

Going by a fan-run set database (dungeonedraghi.it), the rarities break down like this:

  • Commons: #1–13, including the Snow Goblin.

  • Uncommons: #14–33 (including two versions of #24), with bigger beasts like reindeer, wolves, crag cats, and the killer whale.

  • Rares: #34–45, where the set's biggest threats live.

We couldn't find a full official checklist from WizKids, so think of that as a fan guide rather than gospel. We also didn't find any formal reviews of the set.

A note on stock: We have just eight listings from this set right now, and none of the Rares. So instead of chase figures, here are three of our favorite beasts from the frozen north. Honestly, they're the ones you'll use the most.

Killer Whale (#30, Uncommon)

Killer Whale, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden #30

This is a Huge figure, and it's a showstopper. A black-and-white orca leaps out of a block of blue, translucent ice, mid-breach, like it just broke through the surface of a frozen lake. The clear ice gives it a great sense of motion, and it really stands out on a shelf.

Why collectors want it: Big sea creatures are rare in D&D miniatures, and this one is beautifully done. Even if you never run a water encounter, it's a fun display piece.

At the table: Use it for an ice-fishing trip gone wrong, a boat chase, or any time the party crosses frozen water. A killer whale bursting through the ice will wake up any table.

Crag Cat (#25, Uncommon)

Crag Cat, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden #25

The crag cat is a big white mountain cat with a fierce snarl, one of the predators of Icewind Dale that turn up in the adventure. This Large figure is posed with its head low and its mouth open in a snarl, and its fur painted in soft whites and grays that blend right into the snow.

Why collectors want it: It's a creature with real Icewind Dale flavor, and it's a great sculpt. A good snow-colored big cat is surprisingly hard to find.

At the table: Use it for a mountain ambush, a beast stalking the party's camp, or a druid's wild shape in winter. It also makes a fine snow leopard or winter wolf companion.

Wolf, Set of 3 (#20, Uncommon)

Wolf x3, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden #20

Wolves are a staple of every cold-weather campaign, so we've bundled three together. These are gray, Medium wolves in a prowling pose, like they're following a scent through the drifts.

Why collectors want them: Wolves always come in packs, and buying them as a set of three saves you from hunting down singles. It's one of the easiest ways to make a winter encounter feel real.

At the table: Use them for a pack hunt on the tundra, a druid's or ranger's animal friends, or a villain's guard dogs. Add the Crag Cat and you have a full wilderness encounter.

Bundle Up and Browse

We also have a Reghed Nomad with a cage, a Reindeer, a Mountain Goat, a set of three Flind Trappers, and a Snow Goblin. That's enough to stock a whole frozen encounter. Browse our Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden collection, or wander through the whole D&D Miniatures section. We add new figures as we find them, so check back.

Stay warm out there.
