Karwind's Collectibles: D&D Miniatures Spotlight

Turn off the lights. No, really. D&D Icons of the Realms: Underdark Expeditions is the set where some of the miniatures glow in the dark. It's a trip into the caves, tunnels, and fungus forests under the world, full of the strange things that live down there. We have a big selection from it, and these three are the ones we keep showing friends.

About the Set

WizKids announced Underdark Expeditions in January 2025, and it arrived in late May 2025 as the 36th Icons of the Realms set. It has 44 miniatures of Underdark creatures: myconids, hook horrors, umber hulks, beholders, driders, oozes, and more. Its big new feature is DungeonGlo, glow-in-the-dark paint used on some figures or parts of figures. For the best glow, you charge them under a UV light first. Boosters are $19.99 each, and an 8-booster brick retails for $159.92.

Going by Miniature Market's single listings, the rarities break down like this:

  • Commons: 12 figures, from the Myconid Sprout and Flumph to Darkmantles, Piercers, Chokers, and a Gray Ooze.

  • Uncommons: 18 listings (counting color variants of the Giant Bat, Hook Horror, and Umber Hulk), including the Gazer, Xorn, Nabassu, Gas Spore, and Carrion Crawler.

  • Rares: 14 listings, including the Gelatinous Cube, Grell Psychic, Myconid Adult, Drow Inquisitor, two Beholder color variants, and the three below.

  • Very Rare: one, a "Potato Head Beholder" (yes, really).

Reviewers at TechRaptor and StartPlaying were generally impressed with the sculpts. Their take on DungeonGlo was more mixed: it's a fun bonus, but on most figures the glow is fairly faint, with some, like the Gas Spore, standing out. Our advice: buy them for the sculpts and treat the glow as a bonus.

Drider (#39, Rare)

Drider, Underdark Expeditions #39

In the lore, driders are drow cursed by Lolth, their upper half still elf and their lower half a giant spider. This one is a Large figure on a 50mm base (per Miniature Market), and it's a beauty: a drow archer with a drawn bow, perched on eight long, dark spider legs that spread across the whole base.

Why collectors want it: Driders are classic Underdark villains, and this is a big, dramatic sculpt. Going by other retailers' prices, it's one of the most sought-after Rares in the set.

At the table: Use it for a drider, a drow hunter, a spider queen's champion, or the scariest thing in a web-filled cave. Pair it with spiders and drow for a full Underdark ambush.

Adult Oblex (#33, Rare)

Adult Oblex, Underdark Expeditions #33

An oblex is an ooze that feeds on memories, and it's every bit as creepy as that sounds. This one is a bright green, bubbling blob, and it's one of the DungeonGlo figures, so it glows after a charge under UV light. It looks like something you'd step in by accident and regret forever.

Why collectors want it: It's one of the set's glow-in-the-dark Rares, and oozes this weird don't come along often. It's a great conversation piece on any shelf, especially with the lights off.

At the table: Use it for an oblex, a memory-stealing horror, a slime monster, or any creature lurking in a dark tunnel. Turn the lights down when you put it on the table. Your players will love it (and hate it).

Alhoon (#28, Rare)

Alhoon, Underdark Expeditions #28

What's worse than a mind flayer? A mind flayer that became a lich. An alhoon is an undead illithid who traded its life for magic, and this figure shows it in a dark blue robe dotted with stars, its pale tentacles hanging down and one hand reaching out.

Why collectors want it: Alhoons don't get many minis, and this is a great one. It's an easy pick for anyone collecting mind flayers.

At the table: Use it for an alhoon, a mind flayer arcanist, a lich, or the mastermind behind an Underdark conspiracy. It's a perfect final boss for a mid-level adventure.
