From Phandalin to Something Stranger: Phandelver and Below
The road to town looked like the beginning of an ordinary adventure. A few dangerous jobs, a little treasure, perhaps a reputation worth mentioning at the inn. Then the clues started pointing downward, and ordinary stopped being an option.
Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk expands the Phandalin adventure into a campaign for levels 1–12. It revisits the foundations of Lost Mine of Phandelver before carrying the story into a deeper threat involving strange transformations and psionic danger.
Give the Heroes a Place to Care About
A recurring town can do a great deal of storytelling work. Let the players get to know its people, develop favorite places, and see their early successes improve somebody’s life.
When trouble returns, the stakes become personal. The party is protecting a community it helped shape, which is much stronger than asking it to defend a name on a map.
A Familiar Beginning With More Beyond It
If your group already played Lost Mine of Phandelver, consider the overlap before choosing this book. Discuss whether to begin anew or have the DM adapt the later material for your existing party.
Our table idea: keep a short list of the townspeople the heroes have helped. Bring those names back in ordinary scenes between adventures so the town continues to feel alive.
Keep the Discoveries for the Table
This is a campaign book for the Dungeon Master; players will get more from its mysteries if they encounter them through play. A spoiler-light introduction is enough to establish that the story moves from local heroics toward something much stranger.
It suits groups who enjoy watching a modest beginning grow into a larger campaign. There is room for early victories to become the reason the party keeps going.
Help the town. Follow the clues. Be suspicious when the darkness starts feeling familiar.
