Cold Roads, Dark Secrets: Brave Rime of the Frostmaiden
The sun has become a rumor. Your boots are frozen, the next settlement is still miles away, and something beyond the lantern light has decided to follow you. The north offers beautiful scenery. It also offers several ways to become part of it.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden brings a dark adventure to Ten-Towns and its frozen surroundings. Perpetual winter, isolated communities, character secrets, and dangerous wilderness shape a campaign where the environment matters as much as the creatures living in it.
Make Every Warm Welcome Count
A harsh setting gives ordinary comforts unusual power. Shelter, a hot meal, or a friendly local can become memorable when the party has struggled to reach them. The next journey starts to matter because there is somewhere worth returning to.
For a DM, that is an invitation to build atmosphere through small details. Describe the iced-over latch, the silence after a storm, or the effort of keeping a lantern lit.
Secrets Under the Winter Coats
The book includes character secrets and numerous adventure locations. Those ingredients give the party things to discover about the region and one another.
Our table idea: let players decide how much of their secret they want to reveal through play. A quiet conversation by the fire can be as important as a dangerous expedition. Give those scenes room to breathe.
A Campaign for a Colder Mood
This is a strong thematic choice for groups interested in mystery, survival, and unsettling discoveries. Agree on the tone beforehand, then make characters with reasons to help each other when the road becomes difficult.
Some groups will find courage in duty. Others will find it in friendship. A few will insist they are only here for the reward.
Pack another blanket. Trust carefully. Remember which direction leads back to the lights.
