Karwind's Collectibles: D&D Miniatures Spotlight

Not every great miniature has a D&D logo on the box. WizKids also makes Pathfinder Battles figures for Paizo's Pathfinder game, and they fit right in on a D&D table too. A spider-woman, a vampire lord, and a demon made of slime work in just about any fantasy world. This time we're looking at a smaller, unusual set: Pathfinder Battles: Fearsome Forces.

About the Set

Fearsome Forces had a bumpy road to stores. It was first planned for October 2023, but in December 2023 ICv2 reported that it had been reworked and pushed back to September 2024, and it came out that month. It's also a different kind of set. Instead of four-mini boosters, it has 18 figures sold one at a time in random single-mini boosters ($5.99 each), or in a 24-booster Battle Brick ($143.76). The theme is armies and the forces behind them: kholo (Pathfinder's hyena-folk), iruxi (lizardfolk), nagaji and serpentfolk soldiers, orcs, hobgoblins, and the undead, with a few powerful monsters leading the way.

We couldn't find a full official rarity list. Paizo's online store marks some singles as common (like the Kasa Obake, Lifeleecher Brawler, Orc Brute, and Nagaji Soldier) and others as rare (like the Jorogumo and Nosferatu Overlord). Another retailer lists the Omox as rare. Beyond that, we're not confident enough to give you a full breakdown, and we haven't seen a formal review of the set.

Omox (#17, Rare)

Omox, Fearsome Forces #17

This one is pure nightmare fuel, and we mean that as a compliment. The omox is a demon made of slime, and this figure is cast in bright, translucent green so it really looks like a living ooze. Skulls sink into its body, and a gaunt, demonic shape rises out of the goo with its arms spread wide.

Why collectors want it: The translucent green makes it one of the most eye-catching figures in the set, and there aren't many good ooze-demon minis out there. It's a great display piece.

At the table: Use it for an omox, of course, or any slime monster, a sewer horror, a black pudding with ambition, or the boss of a polluted swamp.

Jorogumo (#18, Rare)

Jorogumo, Fearsome Forces #18

In Pathfinder, a jorogumo is a spider spirit that takes the form of a beautiful woman to lure in its prey. This figure shows the moment the disguise slips. She wears an elegant green dress with long dark hair, and huge gray spider legs reach out from behind her. It's beautiful and creepy at the same time.

Why collectors want her: She's the last numbered figure in the set, Paizo lists her as rare, and she's a striking sculpt with a story built right in. Monsters that can play "innocent NPC" are always fun to have.

At the table: Use her for a jorogumo, a drider-like villain, a spider cult's priestess, or the friendly stranger who isn't what she seems.

Nosferatu Overlord (#16, Rare)

Nosferatu Overlord, Fearsome Forces #16

Not all vampires are charming. Nosferatu are the old, monstrous kind, and this overlord looks the part: bald and pale, with pointed ears and long fingers, wearing a dark green robe and holding a red staff. He has one hand raised like he's commanding his servants to rise.

Why collectors want him: Classic horror villains always have fans, and this is a great take on the old-school vampire. Paizo lists him as rare.

At the table: Use him for a vampire lord, a necromancer, a lich's lieutenant, or the master of a haunted castle. Put him next to the set's Zombie Shambler and Harpy Skeleton for an undead army (we have those too).
